Hello! I'm Makaila! I view hair as a vibrant and powerful form of self-expression. I’m especially passionate about vivid and creative color, curly hair, and makeup—my favorite ways to help people showcase their individuality. To me, beauty is deeply personal and limitless; it knows no boundaries when it comes to gender, ethnicity, religion, or sexuality. When you sit in my chair, you’re stepping into a space that’s safe, welcoming, and entirely your own.
I grew up in a tiny village in Allegan County, where I quickly fell in love with all things creative. Whether I was drawing, painting, experimenting with makeup, or dyeing my hair wild colors, I was always chasing new ways to express myself—and helping others do the same. I’ve found so much joy in working with curly hair and learning the unique needs of every texture, as well as creating bold, vibrant looks that let personality shine through. More than anything, I love helping people feel beautiful, not just on the outside but from within.
When I’m not in the salon, you can usually find me by the water—nature is my happy place! During the colder months, I love cozying up indoors with a scary movie or anime and my three beloved cats.

I just had my first experience at Alder and am still practically squealing. I did a vivid hair color by Makaila and it turned out SO GOOD! I'm blown away by how amazing it turned out! The roads were rough the day of my appointment and Makaila reached out to me personally and let me know she'd be a couple minutes late due to the roads, and told me to drive safe, which I thought was really kind. When I walked into the salon, I was greeted with warmth and kindness. Makaila worked on my hair for 6 hours, asking me multiple times if I needed anything to eat or drink. She also let me know what she was doing every step of the way. I can't express how much I appreciate the ladies that work at this salon. If you're looking for a sign to give them a try, this is it!

Makaila gave my curly hair an amazing mullet/shag cut today! She worked with me to create exactly what I was looking for. Having curly hair makes finding a stylist challenging, but I’ve come to trust Makaila — she clearly knows what she’s doing! I am always being asked for recommendations for hair salons that can handle my curly, thick, mixed-race hair and I will now be recommending Alder Hair Co. (P.S. The new salon on Westnedge looks incredible)
